How does a Car Window Regulator Work?
Your vehicle’s power windows are run by an electrical motor. The motor takes input from the door or console switch, then engages the regulator to open or close the window.
The regulator is made up of two tracks, a thin metal wire or cable, and some plastic molded pieces that act as a guide for the cables. Over time, the plastic pieces wear out and break, which can cause the metal cable to come loose and the window to fall inside the door.
If your power windows aren’t working or have fallen into the door, usually the regulator assembly has to be replaced. Most of the time, the regulator and motor are sold as a unit. If you want to fix it yourself, that means you need to remove the door panel, test the motor and regulator, replace or repair the faulty part, then reinstall the door panel. The job is a pain and sometimes requires two people since you may need someone to hold the window glass in place.
